ABOUT US
Formed in 2008, the Education Consortium is a broad-based, non-partisan collaboration of more than 30 organizations who are engaged in increasing the educational opportunities and achievements of the economically and educationally disadvantaged in San Diego County.
Together we are actively working to raise awareness about the importance of extending the A-G curriculum to all middle and high school students so that everyone is prepared for post-secondary training in an apprenticeship, community college, or university program. Such training has become essential in this economy.
Goals of the Consortium
Decrease the drop-out / push-out rates of economically and educationally disadvantaged students in K-12.
Increase the high school graduation rates and college-eligibility rates of economically and educationally disadvantaged students in K-12.
Increase the enrollment and graduation of underrepresented and underprivileged students in local universities, community colleges, and vocational programs.
Educate students and parents about their rights and responsibilities and the resources available to them to access educational opportunities.
Educate the public about the state of access and the importance of increasing access so that all portions of the county are able to contribute to our communities, our economy, and our democracy.
Guiding Principles
We believe that education is the key to strengthening our communities, our economy, and our democracy. As such, parties believe that education should be prioritized in the allocation of public funding and other resources.
We support equal rights and opportunities for all students, regardless of their economic background, linguistic ability, race, ethnicity, gender, national origin, religion, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or any other actual or perceived trait that would qualify them for protection under the laws of California.
We recognize the disparity of opportunities and resources between schools and within schools and believe that if we are to benefit our communities, economy, and democracy, we must work to improve the educational condition of the most disadvantaged students and schools.
We support the rights of all students to a clean school, safe learning environment, adequate instructional materials, and qualified teachers.
We support inter-segmental cooperation and collaboration to create an education continuum with curricular flow that prepares students for economic opportunities and social responsibilities.
We support the creation of a culture of success at all schools and within all communities so that all students strive to reach their fullest potential.
